Making Democracy Work

Stand up, Speak Out!: Advocacy Training

The PowerPoint from Shayna Howell's presentation can be found here. Her talk drew from LWVSC's Advocacy 101 Handbook.

Stand Up Speak Out

This three-part event began with
Dr. Claire Wofford, a College of Charleston professor whose specialization is the U.S. legal system and the role of race, class, and gender in structuring political power.

Bill Rogers, who has been the Executive Director of the South Carolina Press Association for more than 27 years, spoke to the importance of free press and strong journalism to our democracy. The SC Press Association is the trade group for the state's 108 newspapers.

The evening concluded with a session on tools and strategies for issues-based advocacy, led by LWVCA Communications Director, Shayna Howell.

This event was part of our post-election "What's Next?" initiative. In a recent survey asking where expanded LWV efforts would be most helpful, a majority of participants requested an advocacy training.
