Making Democracy Work

Annual Meeting 2017

We believe that public schools form democracy's foundation. They don't merely serve the public; they create it. Be with us Sunday, May 21st for dinner, drinks, and a discussion of our priorities for the year -- public education and the importance of school boards will be top of the list.

Dr. Terry Peterson Highlights Annual Meeting

In the coming year we will focus on local school boards and why it is so important to stay informed and vote in school board elections AND why you should consider serving on them. To speak to this, the League welcomes internationally known education leader, Dr. Terry K. Peterson as its guest speaker for the 2017 Annual Meeting.

Former chief education advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. Peterson Dr. Terry Peterson is the director of the Afterschool and Community Learning Network, chairperson of the board for the After School Alliance, and senior fellow for policy and partnerships at the College of Charleston. He has been an expert witness in South Carolina's Abbeville School Funding case. He is widely regarded as one of the state's most knowledgeable leaders on public education. (See more of Dr. Peterson's biography.)

Dr. Peterson will help the Charleston League kickoff its two-year campaign emphasizing the importance of local school boards -- candidacy, service, and elections -- in the three counties this League serves, Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester.

We apologize but cannot take additional reservations for Sunday afternoon - our catering count was due Thursday 5/18. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter for meeting updates and to be a part of our school board efforts!
